Just a quick note [starting a new job in the morning, should be in bed]...
I've spent the past 15 hours volunteering for the Red-Cross at the Austin Convention Center. 5,000 refugees were bussed-in and we got them fed, cleaned, and dressed. Some people needed medical assistance and some people needed to sleep, but all of them needed to feel safe and welcome... and that's what we tried to give them.
I worked for a while meeting with people and entering names into a central database designed for locating missing family and friends. There were some joyful reunions, but there were also tears. Overall a physically and emotionally draining day.
Also, I just have to say -- these people are awe inspiring. They've literally been through hell and high water. They've lost everything. Many have lost friends or family. All this, and yet they're still grateful.
